Miles to Go, Before I Sleep…

Martin Luther King and his words, ‘Miles to go before I sleep’ has always inspired me a lot. Still I believe that the strength of those words still guides me and that is why I am actively participating in many social activities. That was the only reason for me to get thrilled on getting an invitation to participate in a convention conducted in Atlanta. It was a convention meant to create awareness about human rights. Since I am representing one such organization I too got an invitation. Plane tickets were sponsored by the organizers and the accommodation too was provided by them. It was a dormitory where four or five people have accommodated in a somewhat large room. Since we were there for some social cause, we were quite satisfied with the arrangements made by the organizers. As they had booked tickets in bulk, they might have got good airline discounts too.  Social service organizations have moral obligation to spend less of personal facilities.

The city has a strong population of blacks and most of them are leading a decent life. We could not believe that there were discrimination against blacks here even till the middle of 1900’s. The agitation lead by Martin Luther King during 1960’s brought the sensitive issue to the then presidential candidate, John F Kennedy. Later in 1970s saw the first Black Mayor in the city.

Presently Atlanta is synonymous with human rights as there are many human rights organizations functioning here. Besides, the memorial of Martin Luther King also attracts many people to this city. Flights to Atlanta are always crowded as it is one of the most important business centers of United States of America. Coca-Cola has its head quarters here. Many other international brands like AT & T also are based out of this city. This increases the traffic to the city.

After the convention, we went on a short city tour and visited many places. Martin Luther King’s Atlanta has changed a lot. When the city has a typical busy lifestyle, the denizens are still keeping their culture and the heritage. Various museums and the venues for performing arts underline this fact.

It was quite a different experience. When you can enjoy the typical city life, you can live in the calmness of past too. Both opposite poles of life meet here. Saga of Tokyo

“Japan may be the only one country in this world that had to suffer a lot of miseries. It is an earthquake prone area and in the past centuries it had to face a lot of earthquakes. Fighting against such adverse situations Japan has reached in the top positions on the list of developed countries. They have proved that nothing can prevent us if we work hard with a strong will”. We are in an unofficial meeting. My Boss has just returned from a short trip to Tokyo. He was narrating his experience.

Before going into the subject deeply, he congratulated Mary, his secretary for making fantastic plan for his trip. “She did a thorough study of the airfares offered by various companies, compared with the facilities offered by them and got me the best fares”. He told us.

“Now, Tokyo has become one of the main destinations for the business world, especially when the automotive and electronic sectors are being ruled by Japanese Giants.” Gradually he came to the details of his tour. He went there to make some tie ups with some Japanese Companies to improve our business. He was quite successful in his endeavor and that reflected on his mood too. We were also happy as we all may get chance to visit Tokyo in future.

“Banking sector too is thriving now along with IT and other servicing sectors.” He pointed out that there is myth about Japan that only manufacturing sector is thriving there. “They are providing all supports to the business community including good infrastructure. Nassau-The Bahaman Experience

Since we completed our targets successfully last year, our bosses thought of offering some rewards to us. As a gift they offered us a foreign trip. The choice of the destination was left on us. After lot of deliberations we chose Nassau. We negotiated hard and landed up with good airline deals to this place. As the budget allotted for our trip was limited we did not want to spend much on travel. Hence we had to do tough bargaining with various airline agents for cheap airfare tickets. After completing all the formalities we embarked on our trip. We were a group of seven people and were all mighty excited to visit this beautiful place. Though there are many flights to Nassau, we preferred to visit Miami and Florida first. After spending few days there we went to Nassau. The culture there was totally different from that of Miami and Florida. The beaches and the night clubs were over crowded with visiting tourists. The city has been founded by the refugees from America and their slaves who came there during the American Civil War. Later the slavery has been abolished by a bill passed in the British Parliament. In between it was also conquered by Spanish and Americans twice. With all bloodshed wars and revolts, finally Bahamas attained freedom.

With its beautiful beaches it has been a popular shooting place for many Hollywood Hits. The destination has been captured beautifully several times in the movies. It featured in certain best seller novels too. The hotel where we stayed was in a crowded place. It was an ordinary hotel, still all modern facilities were offered. The hospitality of the natives is well known and it is another thing that attracts many visitors. There is a place called Cable Beach which has been recognized as a Hotel District. Many hotels are located in this area. You can find star hotels as well as the ordinary ones here. This allows people from all strata of society to stay here and enjoy the Bahaman culture.

When we reached there the festival of Junkanoo was going on. Usually this festival is celebrated between December 26 and January 1 every year. It includes a colorful street parade and people in great numbers participate in this parade flaunting their colorful dresses. We took it as a bonus that we could participate in this once in a year festival. In the coming days we visited several other important places like Bahamian Parliament, British Colonial Hotel, Pirates of Nassau museum etc. We were really thrilled to have Bahaman experience and while returning we all vouched to come back soon to Nassau.

Recently our history professor spoke about Jamaica. It was after his visit as a part of delegation, he became fascinated with Jamaica and various cities there. Being a leftist sympathetic, he always becomes more excited while taking about revolts and rebellions. He was also enthusiastic when he spoke about Montego Bay.

“It is another city and port of Jamaica. There are many flights to Montego Bay. I used the domestic service and I caught one of the last minute flights to reach there. Actually that city was not in our tour plan. However when I heard about the Baptist War of 1831 and Samuel Sharpe who lead it I decided to visit this place also”.

As it was not in the original plan, professor had to spend from his pocket for the trip to Montego Bay. Still, the respect to the comrades of Baptist War made professor to bargain for flight tickets for cheap prices. He somehow managed to get one and went to Montego Bay.

“Montego Bay was known as sugar port. It was doing a very good business in those days. Slavery was also prevailing in those days. And there happened a violent revolt of slaves on a Christmas day. It continued for almost a year and their leader Samuel Sharpe got caught and hanged to death here. Now he is a national hero and the main center of the city is in his name.” He detailed the history of Baptist War.”

“But it is not just history, even so many other things are there that will make you interested,” Professor spoke. There are many venues for performing arts and you can enjoy the traditional West Indies cultural programs in the evenings. The rhythmic music and the fast steps of the traditional dances will certainly take you to some other world. Nowadays, that city has become an important location for tourists.” He told.

John is a good artist. He is not just an artist; rather he is devoted to arts. He never misses any art exhibitions that have been conducted in our city. He even traveled wide to participate in many exhibitions.

“I am still a student and I had to learn a lot. All my journeys are for learning more.” He used to say. During one of our weekend get-together s, some of our friends suggested him to visit Helsinki. It has been declared as the design capital of the world at that time. The designing is not limited to arts there. New designs are coming up in all the products that have been manufactured by industries based at that city. These innovative designs made them popular.

Accepting the suggestion, John planned to visit Helsinki. I could understand his emotions when he speaks about various art forms exhibited there. He is such a crazy as far as art is concerned.

“Not only are these museums, every building itself reflecting the artistic talent of the people. I have never seen such talented people.” He was speaking from his heart. “You really helped me with those flight tickets.
